Working with Smith & Sauer Architects, Eurostruct converted a 1920s industrial building in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, once a patisserie headquarters and a paint distribution plant, into Art Cake, an arts center founded by artist brothers Cordy and Ethan Ryman. The 13,000-square-foot renovation included new partitions, plumbing, mechanical systems and structural changes to support the building’s new use. The ground floor is now a 4,200-square-foot event and exhibition space with 17-foot ceilings, a large central skylight, polished concrete floors and original painted brick. Two historic steel columns were left as found to keep the building’s character. Upstairs, a complex of affordable artist studios shares a communal area and roof deck, and income from renting the event space helps keep the studios affordable. Art Cake opened in September 2019.
