Serving as the general contractor, Eurostruct carried out the gut renovation of 225 West 13th Street, a 1909 former playing card warehouse in the West Village, transforming it into the new home of CARA, the Center for Art, Research and Alliances. Working with London-based 6a architects on the practice’s first U.S. project, the team converted the landmarked building into a nonprofit art space under a new certificate of occupancy. With the exterior walls retained and the structure held on temporary shoring, Eurostruct removed the central section of the existing framing to insert a new elevator and stair core, giving public access to every floor, and built a new mechanical and stair bulkhead at the roof. Original concrete floors were restored, old pine floors uncovered and exposed building services installed as a deliberate, finished part of the design, alongside a double-height street-facing gallery, an art hoist in place of the old freight elevator, a ground-floor bookstore and a pocket garden by Dan Pearson Studio.
