space for ideas 1014.

Eurostruct is the construction manager for the renovation of 1014 Fifth Avenue, an early-1900s Beaux-Arts townhouse across from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The six-story building, owned by the German government and once home to the Goethe-Institut in New York, is being transformed into 1014 – Space for Ideas, a center for transatlantic exchange. The design is by David Chipperfield Architects, with KARO Architects as executive architect. It reorganizes the narrow, deep house into public and private areas that meet in a double-height common room, with a winter garden and balcony overlooking the rear courtyard. Exhibition and event spaces fill the lower floors, with living and working quarters for staff and resident fellows above. Designed to be all-electric and zero-carbon, the project is pursuing ILFI Zero Carbon certification while working within the limits of a protected historic building.
